Normally people sleep
with their eyes closed position, but sometimes encountered people sleep on his
eye does not close completely or partially open. Here it is the cause.
Sleeping with your eyes
open, or at least only partially closing the eyelids called nocturnal lagophthalmos. If the lid does not close completely, the eyes
are exposed to the environment that makes it so dry significantly.
Generally in very young
patients, nocturnal lagophthalmos less severe than in older patients. However,
this condition can also occur when a person sleeps during the day.
Although it sounds
strange, but nocturnal lagophthalmos actually considered as a form of facial
paralysis. This condition involves the orbicularis muscle in the eyelids which
can be temporary or permanent, as quoted from About.com, Monday (11/26/2012).
Some conditions or
diseases can trigger nocturnal lagophthalmos, including Bell's Palsy disease,
stroke, side effects of surgery, trauma or certain infections.
If nocturnal
lagophthalmos at night, it can make someone wake up with dry eye symptoms such
as a foreign body sensation, redness, pain, blurred vision, and in some people
become more sensitive to light.
Treatment is usually
given a few drops of artificial tears at certain times throughout the day, and
sometimes also given gel or ointment that will be applied to the eyes.
Eyelid is one barrier
that allows water to lubricate the eye surface of the eye. Tears also has
natural antibiotics to help kill viruses and bacteria.
If the barrier is having
problems, then the eye will be exposed to the outside environment and the tear
film also disrupted. For that this condition should consult a physician in
order to know the exact cause.
